In the Wild: A Fake Madden NFL 12 App for Android

In line with the upcoming Superbowl 2012 on February 5 at Indianapolis, a fake MADDEN_NFL_12_1.0.3 Android application has emerged from third party Android market and file-sharing sites. After installation, this bogus app displays an icon that resembles the legitimate Madden NFL 12 application, which was developed by EA Sports. Its current version is 1.0.3.

When clicked, this fake app notifies users that it is not a registered application. Immediately after, it displays, “Hello World, AndroidMeActivity!”

In the background however, multiple malicious behaviors are already running on the infected phone that are unknown to the user.

• It roots the infected phone.
• It runs an IRC bot and listens for incoming commands.
• It installs another application which is able to send multiple SMS messages.

The actual Android app in the Google Market costs you a few dollars but may cost you lesser than the SMS messages sent by this fraudulent application. This fake app would also cost you some inconvenience, and definitely the action and excitement of the actual game so you might as well get the genuine MADDEN NFL 12 from the Official Android Market.
